So, You've Been Invited to a Murder...
Getting invited to a murder mystery party is thrilling, but if you've never been to one, it can also feel a bit intimidating. Will you have to act? Do you have to memorize lines? What if you're the killer and you ruin the game? Relax—here is exactly what will happen and how to survive the night.
Before the Party: Costumes and Prep
You will receive your character assignment from your host a few weeks prior. This usually includes a brief backstory, some costume suggestions, and a few secrets. Your only job right now is to find an outfit. You do NOT need to memorize a script. Just get a feel for your character's vibe. (Need help? Check out WikiHow's guide on dressing for a mystery party).
Arriving at the Party
When you walk in, you'll likely receive an envelope or a digital link containing your "Round 1" objectives. These are simple goals like, "Find out why the Butler is angry," or "Tell everyone how rich you are." It gives you an immediate, built-in excuse to walk up to strangers and start talking.
The Golden Rule
"You cannot lie unless your character sheet explicitly tells you that you are the murderer. If you are innocent, you must answer questions truthfully (even if it makes you look suspicious!)."
The Murder & The Investigation
Eventually, someone will "die" (usually dramatically, perhaps with a dramatic light flicker). The host will present new evidence—like a police report, a bloody weapon, or a leaked bank statement. From there, it’s a free-for-all. You will gossip, accuse, defend yourself, and try to piece together the timeline.
Don't Worry About Being a Good Actor
You don't need an Oscar. In fact, simply reading your clues with a terrible fake accent is usually the funniest part of the night. The pressure is low, and everyone is in the same boat. If you're ready to dive in, suggest a modern, easy-to-play game format to your host for their next party!
